About the event

How can we improve the city we live in?

Why do we feel crappy when our work doesn’t align with our values?

What sort of cultural changes are important for the improvement of our society?

Have you ever had those philosophical thoughts during a shower, or a 2am sleepless night solving world problems? Well, perhaps this is your Rubik’s Cube moment. As a group, we can start answering these questions by exploring the culture of Sydney.

To examine these philosophical questions, we invite community members from Sydney to join us on this action-focused discussion. Come in for a casual chat, and participate in an open-forum style, thought provoking conversation. Meet other thinkers, and community members from diverse backgrounds, getting together for a meaningful chat!

The evening will be facilitated by fellow peers volunteering their time; opening these important discussions that are generally left ignored. For the first time, we would like to invite the broader community to join us! This event is suitable for anyone wishing to contribute to the discussions about community mental health, geared towards culture change.

This year’s topic:

Social Awareness Night: Societal Unrealistic Expectations

Description: This event is designed to shed light on the unrealistic expectations that society places on individuals, and the negative impact that they can have on mental health and overall well-being. Through interactive discussions, engaging presentations, and personal stories, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the societal pressures we may all be experiencing, as we discuss possible solutions around that.

What attendees will learn:

• The societal factors that contribute to unrealistic expectations • The impact that unrealistic expectations can have on mental health, and overall well-being. • Showcase our social work research findings on this topic. • Discuss and share possible solutions surrounding the issue. • Questions like, can we navigate societal pressures and expectations without sacrificing one's values and authenticity? • We would love attendees to share their thoughts in which may spark ideas for us to create a community project to address the issue.

Benefits of knowing:

By attending this event, attendees will gain a greater understanding of the societal pressures that they may be experiencing and discuss possible solutions. Attendees will also have the opportunity to connect with others and gain a sense of community and support through this educational event. Ultimately, this event will empower attendees to think beyond what is deemed important by society, and to better navigate through unrealistic expectations that potentially hold us back.
