Build your Lens

Updated: Aug 22, 2023

I tried my best here to make a graphic that followed logic and could easily be understood. Its about situational awareness, and demarcates the difference between a passive lens and an active lens See how the 'safe' perspectives are often prescribed to us by tv, social media, our upbringing, our social worlds, or other beleifs. Being able to venture into other perspectives improves our situational awareness, as long as we are willing to critically analyse our assumptions. Our reality is constructed FROM our sensescape, but is highly subject to interpretation, notice how the bear is interpreted as a danger, but on further discussion below, you may find out that different colours of bears have different threat levels, and, through discussion, we can even identify what are the parts that we dont understand yet. (Note from the future: This is the beginning of the development of the notion of reality (particularly social reality) as being fabricated) It is a more fluctuating and nuanced process, and requires more 'mycelium' or psychological resources to function, as they are borne from connecting bravely, respect, willing to communicate across differences. Often we are sold cheatsheets or 'answers' that are tempting to be seen as THE answer, because they avoid us having to do all this psychological work. The effect of those is that we remain stuck with a prefabricated lens, and do not get the opportunity to practice the soapbox skills, because other lenses then become threatening.
