Manchester United vs. Bayern Munich live stream: How to watch Champions League online, TV channel, odds
For Manchester United, it's now or never if they want to stay alive in the UEFA Champions League.
The English side sit bottom of Group A and need a win on Matchday 6 plus a draw between Copenhagen and Galatasaray to advance to the round of 16. They have to get through a dominant Bayern Munich side first, though, and perhaps more importantly, overcome their own inconsistent form that has seen them lose 11 times in 23 games this season.
Manchester United: Try as they may, it seems like United cannot find a way to steady the ship and enter just about every major game this season with an up-and-down list of results behind them. They have two wins in their last five, most recently a 2-1 victory over Chelsea last week that teased hope that was quickly dashed three days later with a 3-0 loss to Bournemouth at home. It means that, for the umpteenth time this season, Erik ten Hag is sitting in the hot seat with a must-win game ahead of him.
The good news is that ten Hag has many of his top players available and the backing of Scott McTominay, but Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial missed Monday's training after falling ill. There is no word yet on whether or not the pair will be available against Bayern on a day United need goals.
Bayern Munich: A steady campaign has come to an abrupt halt for Bayern in recent weeks. They have three wins in their last five, but are winless in their last two. The streak was snapped with a 0-0 draw against Copenhagen on Matchday 5 that was enough to see the German champions clinch top spot in Group A, but left a lot to be desired in attack as they mustered just two shots on target. Things got worse over the weekend with a 5-1 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt in which they out-possessed and outshot the opposition, but put just four of their 20 shots on target.
Bayern do not need anything from this match so it's difficult to say whether or not Thomas Tuchel will start a first choice team, but he may opt to do so to restore the team's rhythm. In that case, expect the Bundesliga's leading goalscorer Harry Kane to get the nod up top and fellow standout Leroy Sane to join him in an attempt to ruin United's day.
United have an unimpressive record in high-stakes matches this season, so even if Bayern rotate, expect the visitors to dominate this one and take all three points home with them. Pick: Manchester United 1, Bayern Munich 3
Manchester United focus, team news
Erik ten Hag’s United have been infuriatingly inconsistent so far this season as they followed up a big win against Chelsea with being hammered at home by Bournemouth. Injuries have been an issue but this United side has enough quality to have put themselves in a much better situation than this heading into the final group stage game. Still, they have to go for the win and we should see a very attacking lineup from Erik ten Hag from the start. United literally have nothing to lose and this is a huge week for the club as they also travel to Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday.
OUT: Casemiro (ankle), Lisandro Martinez (foot), Christian Eriksen (knee), Tyrell Malacia (undisclosed), Jadon Sancho (disciplinary - club), Amad Diallo (ineligible as not registered for UCL group stage), Jonny Evans (thigh), Mason Mount (calf) | QUESTIONABLE: Raphael Varane (lower back), Marcus Rashford (illness), Anthony Martial (illness)
Bayern Munich focus, team news
As we mentioned, Tuchel will be smarting after Bayern’s heavy defeat at Frankfurt at the weekend and even though Bayern don’t need anything from this trip to Old Trafford will they still roll out the big guns? Tuchel may decide to rest the likes of Harry Kane, Joshua Kimmich, Leroy Sane and Dayot Upamecano for this game but he may also decide that getting a big win against United could be more valuable to get Bayern going and have some positive momentum ahead of the Bundesliga’s winter break.
OUT: Serge Gnabry (groin), Matthijs de Ligt (knee), Bouna Sarr (knee, ACL), Sven Ulreich (ankle)
Man Utd vs Bayern Munich preview
Man Utd must beat Group A winners Bayern Munich on Tuesday in order to stand any chance of progressing from the Champions League group stage. And even that might not be enough. Any result other than a Utd victory would see the Red Devils finish bottom of the group and wave goodbye to European football for the rest of the season.
A humiliating 0-3 home defeat to Bournemouth has left Erik ten Hag’s men in a tailspin that they need to recover from quickly. Fortunately for them though, Bayern were also on the wrong end of a hammering at the weekend, a 5-1 shocker at the hands of Eintracht Frankfurt.
Utd no longer control their own fate, but their task is simple. They have to win. Three points at Old Trafford on Tuesday, plus a draw between Copenhagen and Galatasaray, would see the Red Devils qualify for the knockout rounds.
If Man Utd were to beat Munich, and either Copenhagen or Galatasaray were to win their final game, however, ten Hag’s men would finish third and get funneled into the Europa League.
In a campaign that’s seen Utd lose two games from winning positions and squander a two-goal lead to draw another, while scoring 12 and conceding 14, there’s no telling what could happen at Old Trafford. It certainly won’t be dull.
